Six boats made early appearances down at the club for the occasion.

Friday evening started with an outline from Aaron on the manoeuvres we'd all be doing on the lake, which had our heads spinning in anticipation of our boats having to do similar. Ask any of us what "rabbit starts" and "Argentina drills" are now!

Heavy winds on Saturday meant time was most usefully spent ashore. David Dixon gave us an outline of how to rig our boats properly. He started by showing us pictures of sails not-so-perfectly set for the long distance race and pointing out the errors. (That tid bit should leave you wondering whether you featured!). We then compared two rudders and were given advice as to hydrodynamic shaping (and yes, within the rules. Geoff was there!). We also hoisted our sails with the boats still on their trailers to assess mast rake, rig tension, sail shape and the impact of the controls. Notable was that David and Geoff had varying ways of achieving the same objectives making for interesting debate and an amused Aaron had an appropriate introduction to the "one design".

The coincidence of our training weekend with the annual wine and cheese on Saturday evening gave us a great chance to relax and socialise after our first day.

Some bedraggled heads appeared the next day but things got off to a timely start nonetheless. We'd requested a 9:30 start realising how much we had to glean from the those willing to share and we appeared to find the ideal conditions of sunshine and light winds. Geoff and Aaron took us on tacking, gybing, follow-the-leader and start drills. Videos of us were taken on the water and shown to us over lunch with pointers from Aaron and Geoff on how to improve.

In the afternoon we did several more drills. Doing 360s as close as possible around a mark was my personal favourite although my sheethand, James O'Donoghue, would probably disagree as we went around about 20 times without pause (try it sometime!). I felt a bit guilty but that was somewhat relieved by the fact that it was entirely at his brother's instruction! While Susie Coote, William Waller and I twirled our way around three marks with our crews, the others (Reggie Goodbody, Liam Moloney, Johnny Horgan and crews) cruised in from somewhere behind the Corrikeens where Aaron had taken them on their speed and tuning trials. We then had a series of short races, which Reggie duly won.

For our final debrief ashore, Geoff took us through some of the major rule changes for when boats meet giving us copies of the rules and slides with great examples to take away with us. A full written debrief, videos and tips is to follow from Aaron by email.

We couldn't have had a better start to the season. There are already cries for an encore. Other squad members,Karl Mackey, Robert Hanly, Ciara Holohan, Andrew Mackey and Kevin Lynch, also sailed hard in, for many of them, their first Laser Championship.

LDYC Laser squad sailor Georgina Corbett missed the Baltimore event as she was representing LDYC and Ireland at the Easter International Optimist Regatta in Braseemeer

The Squad are next travelling to Lough Erne Yacht Club for the Ulster Championships on 2,3 May.

Following on from the training on 7,8,9 April there will be Mirror and Optimist training along with Junior Sailing over the May weekend.

Una Lee, Coaching Coordinator

Junior Sailing, Easter 2009

It’s nine o’clock on the morning of Tuesday 7th April and already, Optimist sails are flapping gently, head to wind, as their skippers, fully attired for a day on the cold water are rambling around socialising. It’s not surprising that these are the LDYC Optimist sailors who have been training throughout the winter, and who have recently spent February mid-term upskilling in Schull.
Before long, the sails of Lasers and Mirrors add to the colour, and after a short briefing, launching is accomplished in jig-time.
William Atkinson, Conor Byrne, Michael McCarney, Rachel Guy, Hannah Herlihy and George Hooker gave forty four sailors three days of good sailing. Most of the sailors are preparing for their respective circuits, and their energy was palpable both on and off the water. Rigging, tactics, safety checks were integrated into the instruction. Courtesy of the good winds, there was no recourse to the classroom on this occasion.
Vivienne Levie and her team of helpers dished out hot dinners to grateful sailors at midday, and steaming mugs of hot chocolate at 4 pm. Instructors commented that the sailors had much more endurance and stamina in the afternoon as a result. Derek Lambert and his able helpers, Claire and Amy, had given the sail shed a complete makeover, with much better storage for everybody’s sails.
On Tuesday afternoon, the Lamberts took delivery of a 420 dinghy, only to be followed a few hours later by the arrival of second 420 for Tim Starr and Eimear Sparks. We will also have tactics and tuning advice from SOD sailors (David Dickson (fingers crossed, Dave has been approached and is interested) and Geoff O'Donoghue).
The format we are looking at will be, commence the Friday PM with a presentation and discussion from Aaron. Saturday & Sunday will be mixed coaching and sailing sessions. Specific points of tactics and or tuning will be discussed in a classroom forum, the trainees will then decamp to their boats and try it out on the water.
The on the water sessions will focus on applying the learnings from the class room, for instance, starting, mark-rounding, gybing - by sailing small courses - small windward leeward and triangles. The coach will be on the water and will use video to enhance the learning experience - you will get the opportunity to see your performance played back in a debrief session on Sunday afternoon.
The weekend will not be free of course, we seek to cover our expenses and the more participants we have the lower the cost will be. The event will probably cost 50 euro per sailor - this is somewhat contingent on participants - remember we will have the cost of a professional coach.
Please spread the word and contact starrtandm"at"gmail.com for bookings and information.

Mountshannon regatta was a very successful event this year and was held held under the burgee of LDYC and kindly sponsored by SODA.

P.R.O. The overall trophy was won in style by Frank Browne in SOD 86.

The next event of SODs is Cong Regatta over the May bank holiday run by the Leech family under the burgee of LRYC.

ISA Inland Match Racing Championships - ISAF Grade 4
Lough Derg Yacht Club
18/19th April

The ISA Inland Match Racing Championship was sailed in 6-12knts and sunny conditions last weekend in Lough Derg Yacht Club. John Sheehy, Ireland’s Nations Cup representative narrowly won the closely fought event following a series where every team competed in 16 races using the SailFleet J80’s.

The LDYC race management showed their experience by concluding two round robin series giving the competitors maximum racing time and value for money. The club has hosted the SailFleet J80’s for the Winter months and used them to great effect with club members.

Event coordinator, Tom Fitzpatrick said,
“The J80’s suit match racing perfectly as they are evenly matched and well looked after by the bosun. Each team raced every other team at least once and were umpired by Ailbe Millerick from Dublin who coached the teams on the rules as they went. The practice day was definitely needed to dust off any cobwebs and ensure that the teams were able to get into close quarters tacking duals with each other without t-boning each other!
Sunday was the official race day. Each team raced at least 8 races, sailing twice against each other team. Ailbe again umpired the matchs along with Patrick Blaney and Gordon Davies. A huge thank you has to go out to all the umpires without whom competitive match racing could not happen.

After the scheduled flights were sailed Peter Bayly and Mark Tighe, and their respective crews, sailed off in a best of three-race final. Peter only needed two races to take the Cup.

Thanks you to Donal Gleeson, who was race officer over both days, and his willing helpers Margaret and Doireann Kennedy.

The Portroe Cup was donated to the club a number of years ago to try and promote Team Racing and Match Racing within the club. Team Racing and Match Racing are seen as hugely exciting to participate in as well as to watch due to the nature of the short, fast, very close racing and the ability to hold the races close to shore. Hopefully we will see more participation in these two disciplines in the club in the future.

Michael McCarney, Event Organiser

J80 Update:

The ‘CAMELS SAILING PINT’ Series
The Camel Series J80 event run over 4 Sundays in February was a great success, the laurels for the series going the ‘Del Boys’ team.

Portroe Cup Open Event
The next event to be run is the Portroe Cup event being run this weekend. We would like to thank all competitors who took part in the Inaugural J80 Sailfleet "Camel Tank" Championship and hope everyone enjoyed the event. May we also take this opportunity to thank the organisation of our PRO Donal Gleeson for speed and efficiency in turning over 22 races over 4 days, his assistants Geoff and Tim in laying challenging courses and for the great work of keeping the boats ship shape Nigel and Patrick. The prize giving will be held in the Club at 8pm on Saturday 9th May as part of the Club Social Wine and Cheese Night. Principal Race Officer Donal Gleeson, with assistance from his daughter Sarah set exciting and dynamic races for the competitors. Four races were completed on Saturday in fresh South Westerly winds Force 4-5. However the deteriorating weather conditions on Sunday of Southerly winds Force 6, gusting 7, meant that racing had to be cancelled. The competitors had two top coaches supporting them: Tom Mapplebeck and Ger Owens (who, with Phil Lawton represented Ireland in the 470s at the Beijing Olympics this year). Lucille Bradford, President of the 420 association, and Adair Leech with help from parents, provided on shore support for sailors. Following the prize giving ceremony Ms Bradford thanked the Commodore Jack Bayly for extending a warm (literally, Jack had lit the fire upstairs to welcome guests to the club) and friendly welcome to the visiting sailors. Ms Bradford also thanked Lough Derg Yacht Club for the use of the ‘amazing facilities’.

Paddy Moran read from his new poems on
the theme of life in rural Ireland. Eleanor Hooker made her debut
public reading, with some quirky references to human nature and
the natural world. Tony Curtis completed the readings, and in his
own inimitable voice performed his poetry to a rapt and enchanted
audience.
Dr. Martin Mansergh TD, Minister for State with a special
responsibility for the Arts, officially launched the festival on Friday
night October 3rd. In his speech Dr. Mansergh applauded the
hard work of the festival committee, noting that the Festival had
“grown from strength to strength in the four years since its
establishment.” He stressed the importance of the Arts in Ireland,
and his great hope that in these difficult economic times, the arts
would not suffer reduced funding.

The festival exhibition, entitled Frontiers, by Photojournalist and
artist Fergal Shanahan was also officially launched on Friday
night and over the weekend brought a steady stream of visitors to
view the images.

Mary Arrigan, Tony Curtis and John Maher, judges for the
children’s and adult poetry and short story competitions, also
hosted workshops throughout the weekend.

At the Meet the Authors event on Saturday night, novelist James
Ryan and author Brendan Lynch read from their books South of
the Border and There Might Be a Drop of Rain Yet, followed by a
lively and entertaining questions and answers session between the
authors and the audience.

Irish Scholar and Librarian, Diarmuid Breathnach explored the
complex issue of writing memoir in his talk Irish Life Stories:
Profusion and Opportunity, on Sunday afternoon on board the
passenger vessel The Spirit of Killaloe. Breathnach’s account was
nothing short of breathtaking in its range and scope.

To conclude the festival the Nenagh Players performed a
dramatised reading of These Rough Notes; the final writings of
members of Scott’s tragic last expedition to the South Pole. The
presentation was a tour de force; many in the audience were visibly
moved by the actors’ performance. Ronan Dodd played Robert
Scott, Niamh Hogan Kathleen Scott, Peter Thornton played
Edward Wilson and Stephen Toohey Birdie Bowers. To lift the
atmosphere following the play and to close the festival, other
members of the Nenagh Players recited pieces that showpieced the
extraordinary and diverse talent within the Nenagh Players.

Pat Kelly
Chairman Dromineer Literary Festival
patrickjm.kelly@fwi.ie

The Waterways Ireland Classic Boat Regatta at Lough Derg Yacht Club in Dromineer September 13th and 14th was a great success.

(photographs by 'Gareth Craig (fotosail.com) are available in his complete gallery at http://www.fotosail.com/08classicboats )

The success of this event was largely due to the enormous amount of effort and preparation by Susie Coote and her team at Lough Derg Yacht Club. As a historian and author of many books on the Irish Inland Waterways Mrs. Delaney expressed her delight to launch an event that will bring together Classic Boating enthusiasts from all over the Island of Ireland. Commander Charles Lawn of Waterways Ireland also addressed the company.

Guests at the launch enjoyed a movie of an 1950 regatta at LDYC which was kindly donated by Ruth Delaney, a photographic presentation of Classic Boats of the Shannon compiled by Reggie Goodbody and a display of photographs illustrating the many facets of LDYC today including Club Sailing, Schools Sailing, Disabled Sailing, Junior and Adult training.

The Waterways Ireland Classic Boat Regatta was the idea of Joey Kelly of LEYC who, with support from Alan Algeo of LRYC and David Coote of LDYC, led the initial application to Waterways Ireland. The first of these events took place at Lough Erne Yacht Club in 2006, and the theme for the regatta was the Centenary of the Fairie class. In 2007 Lough Ree Yacht Club hosted the second Classic Boat Regatta with the theme Classic Sailing on Lough Ree. Lough Derg Yacht Club has chosen Memories of Sailing on Lough Derg as the theme for their regatta in September.

The classic boat sailed at Lough Derg Yacht Club is the Shannon One Design Class. This boat is an 18ft clinker built vessel, with one mainsail and raced three up. Alongside the Shannon One Design, the Fairie class, the Water Wags, IDRA 14’s, Mermaids, Howth 17’s, Colleens are among the other classic boats that will be seen at the regatta in September. In the Waterways Ireland harbour in Dromineer village, next door to LDYC, the Heritage Boat association will display classic recreational and motor boats

The event is also an ideal opportunity to introduce new sailors to the waters of Lough Derg. It will be possible for both able bodied and disabled sailors to try sailing over the weekend and for visitors to view the sailing races and parades both from the yacht club and the public harbour.

Susie Coote, event manager for Lough Derg Yacht Club, commented that the location of the Waterways Ireland harbour in Dromineer Village, next door to the Yacht Club is beneficial for the event, as it her hope that the “entire village will become a stage to display the Classic Sailing and Motor boats that have shaped the history of the inland waterways and sailing today”. Ms Coote said that she is delighted that so many classes and classic boat enthusiasts have already committed to traveling to LDYC in September, adding that the “event is shaping up to be the largest of the three Waterways Ireland Classic Boat regattas”.

Martin Dennany, Director of Marketing and Communications with Waterways Ireland spoke of the significance of the Classic Boat Regatta. He said, “Waterways Ireland is delighted to be associated with the event which recognises the contribution the Classic boats and their crews have made to the inland waterways. I would like to wish Lough Derg Yacht Club huge success with the event in September and I look forward to welcoming new and past participants in the event to Lough Derg”.

Eleanor Hooker
Rear Commodore Lough Derg Yacht Club
emhooker@eircom.net

Accessible Sailing – new opportunities for people with disabilities on the Inland Waterways

A successful ‘Come and Try Sailing’ Day took place in Dromineer on Lough Derg on Sunday the 20 July organised by Waterways Ireland in partnership with Lough Derg Yacht Club. One hundred and fifteen sailors participated on the course each week. The course has six levels of competency; from beginner Level 1 to Advanced Sailing Skills. Children from as young as nine start their sailing career on the lake. Over twenty Instructors from all over Ireland teach on the course, led by Senior Instructor David White. Weather did not impede sailing instruction this year and sailors were ashore only when they had to have theory classes. Commodore of Lough Derg Yacht Club, Mr. Jack Bayly, said that “despite the lack of sunshine, conditions were perfect for sailing”. Jack said that he was delighted to see boats launched by 10.15am and get full days on the water. J.O. Catherine Sparks said that she pleased a “resource a beautiful as Lough Derg is so completely utilised”; in the evenings after sailing over thirty Optimist sailors participated in additional coaching, the Shannon One Designs boats were out racing along the Urra shoreline and parents such as herself were “hugging themselves with delight” at being afloat completing their Level 1 & 2 sailing instruction.
In the first week of July, ISA Inspector Claire Toohey visited the club to review the course and reported that it was ‘extremely well run’ noting the great facilities and the excellent rapport between members, Instructors and sailors. Management of such a large course would not be possible without the support of the club manager Ciarán Murphy, and the massive volunteer input from parents and members.
(All photographs are by Gerardine Wisdom ~ Telephone Number 087 6522582)

Eleanor Hooker
Rear Commodore Lough Derg Yacht Club
